ACHIEVEMENT PLAN
One of the challenges for professional school counselors is determining what plans and programs are essential for his or her school. Professional school counselors need to make sure that each program helps a student in three key areas: academic, career, or personal/social development. It is also essential that these programs are based on evidence-based practices. This way the professional school counselor can show that these programs are working and helping the students achieve (Dimmitt Carey, & Hatch, 2007).
One of the ways for a professional school counselor to develop these programs is to create an achievement plan. The first step in this process is to develop a needs assessment to determine what the school needs the most. The professional school counselor should develop a needs assessment for all of the three key areas of development. Then, the professional school counselor should create programs based on this information (ASCA, 2012).

ASCA provides examples of needs assessments for school counselors to use. Attached is also an example of a needs assessment used at Burris Laboratory school to determine what social skills are needed in the classroom.

Once the school counselor has given the needs assessment, he or she can develop an achievement plan for the school. Attached below are two example achievement plans found online.
