REferrAL PROCEDURES
There are different types of referrals that professional school counselors and other staff members use. Teachers, parents, and even administrators can refer students to be seen by the counselors. The school counselor can refer a student to a different department within the school. There is also referring a student to a resource in the community, like a tutoring center. Professional school counselors also refer parents to different organizations within the school and community. It is important for professional school counselors to know where to refer students and their families in a quick manner. Each school has different referral procedures that are essential for the school counselor to learn and understand. According to Chen-Hayes, Ockerman, and Mason (2014), collaborating with members of the community is essential to professional school counselors. Professional school counselors should get to know important community resources to give students more opportunities for success. It is also important to have this information readily available in case parents or other staff members need it (Chen-Hayes, Ockerman, & Mason, 2014).

There are two different types of referrals for places within the community that are essential for professional school counselors to have available to them.
First of all, it is important to have a list of community resources around the school that are important to the students and their families. Attached below is the Where To Turn directory for Muncie, Indiana and Delaware County. There are over 150 pages on information on any type of resource that students and parents might be able to use. The second type of referrals that are important are other types of therapists and counselors in the community. It is important for professional school counselors to have relationships with counselors in the community as well so that he or she knows which type of therapist to refer the students to. It is important to know if the therapist specializes in a certain area and if the therapist has a specific way of determining fees. This list of these therapists in the Muncie, Indiana community is also attached below.
